The Holmfirth Gaming Centre

Finally got myself down the road by 3 miles to visit the Holmfirth Gaming Club this Sunday to see their set up and I have to say I was really very impressed. The club is definitely worth a visit if you live locally or are in the area visiting.

They have a fantastic set up, 20 + tables permanently ready to go, with very nice terrain on every one. The staff are very helpful and friendly and as you can see from their flier thay have a variety of different evening and day opening times, catering for wargames, card games and board games.

There is a well stocked shop and facilities for making hot food and drinks.

Five Parsecs: Inspectors from Heresy Miniatures

A week ago or so I said I had ordered some miniatures from Heresy and they arrived nice and quickly and I set about painting them.

I wanted these to use as civilians in my Five Parsecs games, industrial areas and city scapes are rarely devoid of folk just milling about, so I thought I would try Heresy stuff first and I have to say I like them. Good animation and nicely sculpted, they have a certain 2000AD quality that I really like.

KOW: Dwarfs V Abyssl Dwarfs

After playing for so long with the Herd I wanted to revisit my Dwarf army and build one with a difference, namely a go get 'em force. As you will see the wisdom of Steve shone through and made me think again.

We played the Eliminate scenario from Clash of Kings supplement.

Turn one and the Dwarfs stumble forward on their stuntie legs.

The Gyrocopters represent Flame Belchers by the way and the rats should be Mastiffs.

Steve maneuvered his Abyssal Dwarfs, then pounced with several fast small units. I felt outplayed.

He managed to take out one Flame Belcher, and some Ironclad infantry.

While his Grotesques, who are nasty, attacked my Earth Elementals in the wood.

However that allowed me to counter in the next turn and I managed to rid myself of the Gore rider slaves and the centaurs.

Steve had more maneuverable troops, specifically 2 troops of Gargoyles and his general on a huge dragon- the all black miniature.

Any moment the unluckiest part of the game for me, the Drillers had 22 attacks hitting on 4+, crushing Str 1 and I managed .......3 wounds, pathetic.

Above Steves special character whose name escapes me attacked my Warsmith while the Ironguard below were mugged by Grotesques and Gargoyles,  nicely played Steve.

In the last 2 turns which went too fast for me to photograph it seems, Steve brought the game to an end, although at the cost of his Grotesques and Immortals, but the combination of flank and rear charges supported by characters and flyers saw the end of my horde and another regiment of Ironguard and that was the end of the game, Steve's troops had gathered 6 tokens, I believe, to my 2 and so won easily.

This brought to an end a short run of three games with the Dwarfs, all of which were losses but interesting to play, non of which were complete disasters, and all of which taught me something.

Basically what Steve said was, play to their strengths, war machines and crossbows. So the next time the Dwarfs make an appearance they will more classic in nature, cannons and organ guns and crossbows. But not for some time as its time for my orcs to finally make an appearance.

Five Parsecs: Small Towers

Got completely sidetracked by the idea of creating some small towers for my games of Five Parsecs from Home. Mainly using the huge amount of card I get to recycle every week from cat food bought for 5 cats!

Used some coffee stirers to give strength and create detail.

I also used cereal packet card as well for the the more shallow areas and details.

These are very similar to the larger builds I made for the WWarriors GC a few months ago except they are about half the size, perhaps a little less. Useful to me because they are easier to store.

Included some pictures of the models unpainted at end of post to give some idea of how I made them.

Frostgrave: Completed Archway and Rubble

Last week I posted some pictures of the built but unfinished terrain piece that was an archway. Following on from my apparent need to create aquarium standard terrain pieces, I intend creating a giant clam with a diver swimming in and out of it later in the year..... no I don't.
So all complete and the second already started I thought I would post the first with the 2 rubble pieces.

Added a few Reaper Bones characters we use for our Frostgrave games.

Details of the rubble.

Basically painted with a base of a cheap version of Fang grey, overbrushed with ghost grey and topped with white. I picked out the wood pieces in brown and highlighted them too. I then washed it all over and then went back with the white to re-emphasize the details.
All the paints I use are basic emulsions with water and washing up liquid added to aid flow. Mainly bought from the Range and B&Q.
