Terrain: Modern Buildings

Finally got round to creating the basic forms for the rest of the buildings I am going to be making based on the original here pictured at the front.

They are all made from the same cat food card boxes I used for the first, along with more basic bricks from the wooden kiddies set I bought ages ago.

When complete I will have 4 buildings that I can set to various heights so that all the bases are covered, so to speak.

These all come to pieces and when I have a few more roof top sections I will be able to have perhaps 6 buildings in total from what I have made here.

Next I have to cut all the parts to create the details and then glue them in place. But since I know what I am doing should not take too long.

Finally will come the painting.

Must apologise for not being very active recently but have had a case of sinusitis for last two weeks and really haven't felt much like doing any modeling at all.
Noses eh?

Terrain: Modern building first finished.... I think

This is the first of the more modern buildings I have been working on and the part of the process I was looking forward least to doing; the painting.

I kept it simple for the moment although I might return to it later and add some further details.

I gave everything but the windows and frames a coat of sandy masonry paint to begin with in an attempt to create a concrete type effect.

Then painted greys of various hues until I finished with white.

Looking at the image below I realise that the join in the cat food box is clearly visible despite being filled with card. The next one will have to have something else done to it as I don't like that, perhaps a piece of card inserted into the window, the same size.

The windows were just blue then washed over with a black, very watered down.

Still not sure what to do with the inside quite yet, at the least I should give it some colour. The roof also comes off, so there will be that one to think about as well.

I have already built a load more carcasses and need to add the details next, will post again on this topic when all the construction is complete.

Overall I like them, but do worry that they may not get used that often and are very much dedicated to only one scale, 30mm ish. Only time will tell I suppose.

Terrain: Modern Buildings WIP

This is the beginning of a building project that puts me right out of my comfort zone. Namely the construction of a modern building which needs to look modern or futuristic without being straight up Necromunda type terrain. Something that you might see in a city.

Obviously the other problem is the severe limitation of which materials I have available. So basically cat food boxes!

Also I wanted them so that they can be stacked to make tall skyscrapers or used singularly to make lower level buildings. Also I wanted them to have the possibility of interiors added sometime in the future.

This is the basic concept all separated. Creating the textures and painting is where it may well all fall apart. Only time will tell.

I had a look at some of my old Marvel comics to get ideas fro roof tops and they all seem to be littered with small sheds, water towers and boiler rooms, so the blocks I hoped would sort of represent those.

Have used cereal card, wooden blocks from Home bargains, coffee stirrers and PVAcrete.

I like the look and practicality of them but am not sure if I will be able to paint them well enough to look how I want them.

Soon as this one is painted I will post. Fingers crossed!

Reclaimed/Re-purposed Boards

I recently spent a few days considering buying a load of different 2 foot square gaming mats to use for D&D. I got as far as making a list, checked it twice, but it turned out that I had been nasty and not nice enough by far....

Anyway I looked at the list, I looked at my bank account and back to the site I was thinking of purchasing from and after quite sometime I decided that it was not something I needed to do. I hadn't realised how many boards I had already, while others I could re-work and give them a new life.

Cobbles.

This is the old GW static grass mat stuck onto chip board, I did not make this one :-)

Desert sand a new board.

Mars attacks another new board.

Winter soldiers, a re-worked board. I have another 2' by 4' which I need to cut in half and then decide how I will use them.

Deep blue a new board.

D&D dungeon board.

D&D temple board.

Cobbles and grit. I have another 2 boards with a mix of cobbles and waste land and these I will be completing next.

This last set are actually self adhesive floor tiles, so not made by me. Every time I go to B&Q I have a look at the tiles to see if anything catches my eye and is cheap. These two were about 6 pounds for 12 tiles which I consider to be fairly priced.

On one side is what you see above and the other has the grey 1" squares.

Half and half.

After I had made the new boards and laid out what I had and the fact that I still have 6, 2' boards to complete I decided I didn't really need to buy anything, thus saving the world more junk and my pocket the expense.
